Plant Mangrove to Help with Natural Disaster
Community Action

Validated Impact:
Positive impact through 150 trees
Mangrove forests are important habitat for fish and they also help protect coastal communities from land erosion, floods and tsunamis. Despite this, mangrove forests in Indonesia are being destroyed at an alarming rate. In fact, 71 percent of Indonesian mangrove forests have already been damaged [1].
In 2012, IDEP Foundation began a program in partnership with Phillip Morris to train local coastal communities on the importance of mangroves for their local fishing industry and disaster risk management. We began last year in Surabaya, Java, where rapid development along the coastal has wiped out mangroves at a horrific rate.
