WOTS Performance of the National Puppet “Mbangun Suralaya” as a Form of Tolerance and Diversity

Wayang On The Street (WOTS) returns to greet the public at the Road to Festival Kota Lama (FKL) event. The 12th WOTS performance carries the special title “National Puppet” which was held at the Borsumy Heritage Parking Yard, Kota Lama, Semarang, last Friday (11/8/2023).
The collaborative performance of Javanese traditional puppets and Cingge Chinese puppets involving 127 talents was opened with "Semarangan Dance" by Totok Pamungkas. The wayang show, which was directed by Budi Lee and music arranger Githung Sogianto, carried the play: “Mbangun Suralaya” enchanted hundreds of spectators who packed the Borsumy Heritage parking area, which did not move until the end.
The Head of the Semarang City Culture and Tourism Office, Wing Wiyarso Poespojoedo, CEO of PT Sidomuncul Irwan Hidayat and other invited guests were present. On this occasion the Ngesti Pandowo Wayang Award was also given to Irwan Hidayat (CEO of PT Sido Muncul) which was handed over by Ki Drs Djoko Mulyono and Prof. Hardhono Susanto.
The Head of the Semarang City Culture and Tourism Office, Wing Wiyarso Poespojoedo in his remarks said he really appreciated the organizers of the WOTS. This collaborative performance of “Wayang Nationality” makes Semarang different.
The collaboration between the two wayang is a reflection of ethnic and cultural tolerance in the midst of the multiculturalism of the city of Semarang. So it"s only natural that Komnas HAM gives Semarang an award as a Tolerant City
"On this evening we collaborate together to show Semarang is different, we together build an increasingly great Semarang City. This collaborative puppet show also shows that Semarang is a harmonious city, ” said Wing.
The initiator of WOTS Semarang, Grace Widjaya, said that this year"s WOTS carries a special theme; "National Puppet" is related to activities to welcome the 78th Birthday of the Republic of Indonesia. WOTS Road to the Kota Lama Festival is also part of the FKL agenda
"WOTS "National Puppet" is a collaborative wayang orang performance, a combination of Javanese Wayang Orang and Wayan Cingge, a symbol of tolerance and harmony. .Interestingly, continued Grace Widjaya, who works as a dentist every day, the performers aside from the professional players from WO Ngesti Pandowo, Wayang Cingge also presented guest stars from bank executives who are members of the Central Java Regional Banking Consultative Council (BMPD), namely; Rahmat Dwisaputra, Junanto Herdiawan, Ndari Surjaningsih, Dedy Irianto, Irianto Harko Saputro, I Gusti Nyoman, Putra, Dorkas Minar Gandaria Pasaribu, Ridal Agus Prabowo,, Widjaya Stephen, Agoes Soehardi, Elisabeth Monica Iswanto, Cicilia Renata, Adhi Setiawan, Budi Darmawan and Harjanto Halim (CEO of Marimas).
Prior to the puppet show, a "National Puppet" Parade was held with a route along Jalan Taman Srigunting, Lt. Gen. Suprapto and Branjangan with participants wearing puppet costumes. This wayang parade represents symbols of nationality and diversity as well as requirements for the nation"s noble values. The parade consisted of Mbangun Suralaya, Garuda, Red and White Flags, Pelita Shield, Cucuk Lampah, Pepadi Nacha Shield, and the BMPD Contingent.
On that occasion, awards were given to the participants of the Best Parade and Best Costume. At the end of the event, there was a burning of enthusiasm towards Advanced Indonesia. The torch was handed over by Chairman Ngesti Pandowo Djoko Mulyono (80) who gave the torch to Hanoman. Meanwhile, Hendrawan Kwa Thong Hay (70) gave the torch to Sun Go Kong. The baton has been handed over to the younger generation, the hope is that Indonesian puppets will continue to advance. Let"s ignite the fire of togetherness towards an advanced Indonesia together.
In the finale, the singing performance together with the song "Rumah Kita" with the lead vocal Mr. Rahmat Dwisaputra from Bank Indonesia was closed with the lighting of fireworks.
