MIDANG (Part 2)
Berita Warga

At the rice bisoq and the beedang or bedang events, the dedare gathered as well as the terunes helping out while seeking the sympathy of the girl of her choice. A girl or dedare can be the bone of contention for some terune at that time. Therefore, the terune tries to look attractive and polite to get the attention he wants, including me,” said Mr. H. Moh. Khalil smiled.
When the dedare start to cook on the jangkih for about 10 meters (jangkih = stove) then the terune will come to the front of the jangkih to just help lift the container of rice that is ready to be cooked or just ask dedare for fire to burn his cigarette. During the meeting, communication took place using symbolic words which in general the Sasak people have understood them.
When viewed from the initial concept of introducing Sasak terune and dedare, in terms of midang, the bargaining position of Sasak women before marriage is very good to prevent acts of violence against women. Midang actually basically is trying to get to know each other and this puts women"s bargaining position in a good place where women will determine the next step. Communication between terune and dedare can occur during midang and can occur in bedang/beredang activities.
Midang can be done by terune in dedare"s house, it can be once in two weeks, it can be once a month depending on the terune. During this midang, terune and dedare tried to get to know each other better. In this process, it is the dedare who determines who the man he chooses will be. If the dedare is already interested, and the terune doesn"t know whether he is accepted by the dedare, because the languages used during midang are symbolic languages, then to make sure he is accepted/rejected, when there are important events such as Lebaran nine, buluran mame , or religious events, terune will come to dedare"s house with pereweh (souvenirs). These souvenirs are not seen from their material value but only as symbols. If the gift is received, then the terune has the opportunity to continue with the dedare alias accepted. If it is not accepted, the dedare will also convey it well about his refusal.
On the other side of the midang event, there is an impact. Because it"s not only us who come to the midang, but other people (other terunes) also have the same rights, it can happen at one time that two or more terunes come to the house of a Sasak dedare. His arrival of course may not coincide. Then there will be an event called a mutual header. If, for example, Terune A came first, then fifteen minutes later Terune B came to the same dedare"s house, Terune A who came first, had to give in to give Terune B a chance. Terune A had to go home first by saying goodbye in English. polite too. And so on, the next header event will occur if there is Terune C coming. If you don"t want to go home, there is a possibility of a debate/fight between the two of them. (Sundul = asked to excuse me / go).
However, if Terune B already knows that Terune A is at the same dedare"s house, then he has to wait for another night"s turn to be able to meet and talk to his ideal dedare. However, in this condition there was never any friction or grudge between the youths. This is because in the ancient Sasak tribe, these kinds of things were common and often experienced.
In addition to the term midang is ngujang. Ngujang is a terune who comes to meet Dedare at work. For example, in the fields or farms, then the terune helps the dedare to work, helps plant rice, harvest rice, harvest soybeans, and other jobs. Usually the terune who ngujang brings something for the dedare, for example snacks, fruits, drinks, combinations of food and drinks or others. Giving or giving terune to dedare is usually called mereweh, or in Perina"s language it is called bejambek. This penjambek or Pereweh (= souvenirs) can also be brought during midang or during beredang/bedang activities. (Hj. SUHERNI : Mahasiswa Pascasarjana UNDIKMA)
