The Future of Lampung Culture
Meanwhile, Dr. Riyan Hidayatullah, M.Pd in his cultural speech entitled: Young People, Intellectuality and the Future of Lampung Culture. The best doctor who graduated from Semarang State University in 2022 started his speech inviting us to re-equalize our perceptions regarding different terms or misconceptions, for example the difference between the terms tradition and culture.
Many people think these two terms are the same, even though the difference is very clear. Traditions are habits that are passed down vertically, from one generation to another, while culture is horizontal.“Culture includes the entire way of life of a group or society, including values, norms, language, art, beliefs, and other forms of social expression. "Tradition is part of culture, but not all culture is tradition," explained this Lampung University lecturer.
Furthermore, the Secretary of the Language and Arts Department of FKIP Unila emphasized that culture includes more than just traditions because it often involves innovation, creativity, adaptation and changes that occur in society.
Traditions are often considered a static part of culture, while culture as a whole is more dynamic and can change over time. The two certainly cannot be separated, they must go hand in hand and complement each other.
"Thus, culture must be understood not only as a complementary element, but as the core of every cross-disciplinary thought and practice," reminded Riyan.
By conveying these misconceptions, he continued, we want to emphasize the importance of a deeper understanding of how to think, behave and build an identity in society. This understanding is a manifestation of an intellectual process, as well as important capital in cultural work.According to Riyan, misconceptions about culture have a very serious impact on the survival of local communities in the future, especially the younger generation who are the successors of the relay of civilization.
"This misunderstanding not only weakens local cultural identity, but can also cause value disorientation, social imbalance, and even the loss of traditions," he explained.
The younger generation serves as a bridge connecting the past with the future, ensuring that cultural identity remains alive and thriving.
“The younger generation is at the forefront in protecting this identity. "Without the role of the younger generation, local cultural identity is at risk of being displaced by global cultural homogenization," said Riyan.
