Public attention has turned to the frequent zoning violations occurring in Palembang, with residents calling on the city government to take firm action. In addition to halting the suspected illegal construction, the government is also urged to evaluate the current permitting system to prevent future violations.
Responding to this issue, the Lintas Aktivis Antar Generasi Indonesia (LAAGI) staged a protest in front of the Palembang Mayor’s Office on Thursday (September 12, 2024). The demonstration was triggered by the alleged illegal construction of a hotel on Jalan Seroya, which is believed to violate several regulations.
The demonstrators passionately demanded the city government to stop and seal off the project immediately.
Sukma Hidayat, the protest coordinator, stated, "The hotel construction lacks complete environmental permits and has not undergone a Traffic Impact Analysis (Amdalalin). We strongly suspect this building violates numerous regulations. We demand that all construction activities be stopped and the project sealed off."
Echoing Sukma’s concerns, field coordinator Ki Mus Mulyono also called for legal action against those involved in the violations. "We demand strict sanctions against the parties responsible, especially concerning the construction of this hotel," he said.
In response, the Mayor"s Special Staff for Legal Affairs, Ahmadi, stated that the government would review the demonstrators" demands. "We will study these demands carefully and bring them to the attention of the leadership for further action," he remarked.
This incident highlights the need for a comprehensive review of the permitting system in Palembang to prevent future zoning violations.
