Harry Suryo Holds Solo Exhibition “Hari-Hari Harry’” at TAN Artspace Semarang

Painter Harry Suryo is hosting his 3rd solo exhibition titled“Hari-Hari Harry’” at TAN Artspace, Jalan Papandayan 11, Semarang, Central Java. The“Hari-Hari Harry’” exhibition will run from April 12 to April 25, 2025.
The exhibition, which was hosted by Dr. Muhammad Rahman Athian, displays dozens of watercolor paintings by Harry Suryo and was opened by the Head of the Semarang City Culture and Tourism Office, R. Wing Wiyarso Poespo Joedho, S.Sos, M.Si, Saturday (12/04/2025). The opening was marked by the signing of a plaque before a tour of the works to enjoy the paintings in the exhibition space.
Head of the Culture and Tourism Office, Wing Wiyarso, was proud and appreciated the exhibition held by Harry Suryo, who was also his friend during college and his career as a civil servant. “Since he was a student, Harry has been active and creative in the world of art.”Especially since retiring as a civil servant, his days are filled with painting activities. Mas Harry’s works are very interesting. "Hopefully this exhibition will motivate other painters," said Wing Wiyarso. On that occasion, the Head of the Culture and Tourism Office also invited Semarang painters to design a joint exhibition that would last for several days. "I will facilitate this activity. Because I am sure that Semarang"s painter potential is no less than Yogyakarta and Bandung," said Wing Wiyarso before opening the exhibition that afternoon.The Chairperson of the Indonesian Watercolor Painting Community (KOLCAI) Ratna Sawitri appreciated and welcomed the solo exhibition held by one of the master watercolor painters of Indonesia who lives in Semarang City. "I have known Mr. Harry Suryo since he was involved in photography and was active in the OASE Community which also pioneered art activities in Kota Lama," said Nana, her nickname, who is also the Chairperson of Semarang Sketchwalk.
Ratna added that Harry Suryo is also one of the founders of the Semarang Sketchwalk sketch community as well as the driving force and founder of Semarang Watercolorist which later changed to Kolcai Chapter of Semarang City.
Chairperson of Kolcai Chapter of Semarang City Dony Hendro Wibowo said that watercolor painting exhibitions are rare in Semarang which often exhibits paintings with acrylic media.
"It could be because of market considerations, the choice of watercolor media is not popular. But what is interesting is that Mr. Harry is one of the Semarang painters who consistently pursues watercolor media. Therefore, the exhibition of paintings with watercolor media is interesting and different," said Dony, who is also the Owner of TAN Artspace.
Dony added that the Kolcai Chapter of Semarang City appreciated the solo exhibition "Harry"s Days" which is expected to be a trigger for other Kolcai members to exhibit.Meanwhile, Dr. Muhammad Rahman Athian in his introduction said, in the exhibition entitled: "Harry"s Days" Harry Suryo presents his works using the watercolor technique expressing the daily uncertainty and freedom using water and color media.
"With unexpected strokes of color, Harry celebrates simple moments in life that are often missed but have deep meaning," he said.
Athian added that Harry Suryo"s works reflect the paradox between control and freedom and the ongoing journey of time, bringing unexpected changes. In this simplicity, Athian continued, there is a reflection on human existence that is connected to unexpected daily routines, but sometimes very meaningful.
According to Harry Suryo, his solo exhibition entitled: “Hari-Hari Harry’” has been prepared for the past three years. This exhibition presents his paintings ranging from 2021 to 2025. "This exhibition is part of the plan to publish my biography," said Harry Suryo.
"As an artist, I try to explore things in the surrounding environment with a touch of creativity and imagination, turning the object into something beautiful, spectacular and meaningful," explained Harry, who often exhibits internationally.
