Chaos in South Sumatra"s PPDB: Provincial Government and HIMPKA Unite to Seek Solutions

Efforts to resolve the New Student Admission (PPDB) issues in South Sumatra Province have intensified. Drs. H Edward Candra, MH, the Acting Secretary of South Sumatra Province, held a meeting with Ki Mus Mulyono, Chairman of the South Sumatra branch of the Tamansiswa Family Association (HIMPKA), along with education activists and artists in his office on July 25, 2024. The meeting was also attended by the Head of the Provincial Education Office, the Head of the Provincial Kesbangpol Agency, the Head of the Provincial Civil Service Police Unit, and the Heads of the General Affairs and Public Relations Departments.
During the meeting, Ki Mus Mulyono highlighted several main issues related to PPDB in South Sumatra. "Educational infrastructure in South Sumatra is incomplete, hindering the optimal education process," he explained. Additionally, there are allegations of violations in the 2024 PPDB process involving 911 students, according to findings by the Ombudsman. HIMPKA plans to monitor this issue over the next 30 days, with the Inspectorate coordinating with the Ombudsman to ensure that 911 high-achieving students can return to school. "Sanctions against anyone involved in the alleged misuse related to PPDB will be enforced in accordance with applicable laws," stressed Ki Mus.
Ali Goik revealed that HIMPKA and education activists in South Sumatra have held eight demonstrations protesting the PPDB implementation. "The PPDB process has violated children"s rights and is inconsistent with educational autonomy," said Ali Goik. They demand that the PPDB be postponed and reverted to the previous system. Additionally, Ali Goik called for the Acting Governor, through the Acting Secretary of South Sumatra, to dismiss Sutoko from his position due to his disruptive handling of the 2024 PPDB.

"We are requesting data from HIMPKA, especially from their complaint center," he said. The PPDB issues in Gelumbang and Sungai Rotan Muara Enim, particularly the zoning path, will be further studied. HIMPKA"s recommendation to review the performance of the Acting Head of the Education Office will also be conveyed to the Acting Governor of South Sumatra.
