Binus University and KDS Hold 1000 Gen Z Wearables to Achieve MURI Record

The Binus University Semarang event in collaboration with the Diajeng Semarang Community (KDS) succeeded in winning a MURI record. The 1000 Gen Z Berkebaya event entitled: Cultural Fusion: Kebaya in Gen Z Creativity, which was held by Binus University and KDS at the Binus POJ City Campus, Semarang, Wednesday (24/07/2024) succeeded in setting a MURI record.
The 1000 Gen Z Wearing Baya event, which was held to celebrate National Kebaya Day, involved more than a thousand participants from students, university students, lecturers and the community. This event is a movement aimed at celebrating and revitalizing the kebaya as part of national identity.
KDS founder Maya Dewi said, we are collaborating with BINUS University Semarang to show kebaya as a cultural identity that we need to preserve, especially for Gen Z. "We want to educate Gen Z to love culture, especially batik and kebaya," said Maya.
Furthermore, Maya, said, the 1000 Gen Z Berkebaya event was enlivened with a kebaya parade showing off the kutubaru kebaya and sogan motif batik cloth which combined traditional elegance with a modern touch.
“This proves that kebaya can remain stylish and relevant for the younger generation. "So don"t be embarrassed to wear kebaya and cloth because it"s fashionable," said Maya.
Meanwhile, the Chancellor of BINUS University, Dr Nelly SKom MM CSCA, in his speech said, apart from the kebaya parade, this event achieved a MURI record, namely the wearing of the kubaru kebaya and the sogan motif jarik by the most women, this event marked an extraordinary achievement in efforts to preserve the kebaya.
According to Nelly, this activity proves that kebaya can be an important part of our identity, even in this modern era. Let us support and appreciate every effort to keep the kebaya relevant and part of the character education of the nation"s future generations.
"So this event is not just a celebration, but also a movement to inspire the younger generation to better appreciate and preserve Indonesia"s cultural heritage," he continued.
Nelly added that Binus University has a character building course that all students must take and at the beginning of every week of each month students are required to wear traditional Indonesian clothing. Through these courses, the cultivation of love for one"s own nation"s ancestral culture is still glorified.
“It turns out, Gen Z can wear kebaya with their own uniqueness. They wear kebaya by wearing sneakers or contemporary shoes. "The important thing is that they realize that we have a great culture, namely the kebaya," said Nelly
The event to enliven National Kebaya Day was also filled with talk shows, book launches and competitions to show their creativity and open their minds about the importance of kebaya in the modern era.
This is a showcase for young people who want to contribute to cultural preservation. Apart from that, this event was enlivened by performances of traditional music from North Sulawesi, Kolintang from the Beelintang Group, Karawitan from Javanika Binus School Semarang and the Smaradhana Dance from KDS.
Meanwhile, Director of the BINUS University Semarang Campus, Dr. Fredy Purnomo, S.Kom., M.Kom hopes that through this event, the younger generation can get to know and love kebaya as Indonesia"s rich cultural heritage, while integrating the spirit of collaboration and industrial technology 4.0.
Before handing over the MURI Record award, MURI Person in Charge Ari Andriani expressed his assessment that after verification there were 1,170 students wearing the Polararu motif kebaya and Sogan motif jarik so they deserved the MURI record.
